Should I tell the recruiter what salary I am looking for?

Q: Should I tell the recruiter what salary I am looking for?

A: Most recruiters will tell you that you should. They give you that advice mainly because getting that number from you will help them to A) negotiate you down to an even lower salary and/or B) screen you out.

One issue is, if you tell the recruiter the lowest salary you will accept, then the recruiter will often try to negotiate you down you to an even lower salary. Why? Because the recruiter will think your lowest salary is the start in his/her negotiation for an even lower salary.

Naturally, you want to receive the highest possible salary. However, recruiters are paid by employers. They fight for the interests of employers. Therefore, they want to get you the lowest possible salary.
